More children added to the toll of those affected by excessive lead in applesauce

In the past week, the number of children impacted by high lead levels in specific cinnamon applesauce pouches has increased. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 422 cases across 44 states, up from 413 cases in 43 states on February 2nd. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received 90 reports as of February 13th, similar to late January figures. Both agencies use separate reporting systems, so their numbers shouldn't be combined.

Concerns arose in the fall of 2023 when North Carolina health officials reported elevated lead levels in children who consumed the applesauce. This led to the investigation and subsequent recall of three brands—Wanabana, Schnucks, and Weis—of cinnamon applesauce pouches in the United States. Health authorities advise parents to check their homes for recalled products despite their long shelf life.
