New ECA Guidance on Sample Management and Sampling

The ECA Analytical Quality Control Group (AQCG) released Version 1 of its new guidance, Laboratory Data Management Guidance – Sampling and Sample Management, on 30 April 2025. Authored by AQCG Chair Dr. Christopher Burgess, and reviewed internally and externally by Jane Weitzel (USP expert), the document highlights the importance of proper sampling to reduce errors and maintain data integrity. It covers statistical sampling plans, protocol design, and record documentation, supported by practical examples and illustrations.

Spanning 24 pages, the guidance includes 12 illustrations and 34 references, organized into 11 chapters ranging from the theory and nomenclature of sampling to regulatory requirements and the role of sampling within the overall testing process.

AQCG members can download the guidance for free from the members area. A complimentary webinar by Dr. Burgess is scheduled for 17 June 2025 at 10 am CEST, featuring a 45-minute presentation plus Q&A. Registration and presentation slides are available to members online.
